This is a bit unexpected.
You’ve probably seen comedian Jim Carrey in movies like How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Dumb and Dumber. And when you did, you probably didn’t think of him as a religious iconographer… but here we are.
Carrey hasn’t done a many films lately, and instead he’s taken up painting. His paintings have dealt with many subjects, from cultural commentary to politics.
This most recent Good Friday, Carrey took up the greatest subject of them all: Jesus Christ, and his sacrifice for our sins on the cross.
Here’s his painting, as he posted it on Twitter:
The tweet reads: “The story of Jesus is a perfect example of the journey toward salvation through honesty and courage in the face of suffering, the surrender of the ego (thy will not my will), and forgiveness. How will you bear your cross? Happy Good Friday! ;^)”
Carrey was raised Catholic, but it’s not clear Carrey is a believing Christian today. Rather, he appears to have some Christian beliefs mixed with some New Age beliefs.
Last year, he was recorded saying, “Christ on the cross suffered terribly and was broken by it to the point of doubt and feeling of absolute abandonment. Then a decision was made – to look upon the people who were causing that suffering, with compassion and with forgiveness. And that’s what opens the gates of heaven for all of us.”
That sounds somewhat Christian, but he went on to say strange things about the omnipresence of God and the Eucharist: “They talk about omnipresence in church and nobody really thinks about what that means. What it means is every cell in your body is God. Everything is God. Everything is divine. When you do good things and transcend the negativity and attempt to do something positive, you are the heart of God, the eyes of God. When you speak from that place you are God’s voice. When you make a loaf of bread in this kitchen that is a Eucharist. You are blessing people with your work…That is the body of Christ.”
