Statement on the Death of Most Reverend John J. Myers, J.C.D., D.D., Archbishop Emeritus of Newark

The Most Reverend John J. Myers, J.C.D., D.D., Archbishop Emeritus of Newark, entered into eternal life on Thursday, September 24, 2020.  He was 79 years old.

Upon hearing the news of Archbishop Myers’ passing, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, said, “On behalf of my brother Bishops and the entire family of God here in our local Church of Newark, I extend my heartfelt prayers and condolences to his family. Let us thank God for Archbishop Myers’ service and his love of our Church. I entrust him to the loving arms of our Blessed Mother Mary, and I pray that Our Lord grant him peace.”

Archbishop Myers, who was born in Ottawa, Illinois and was the eldest of seven children, was ordained to the priesthood in 1966 and consecrated coadjutor Bishop of Peoria, Illinois, in 1987. 

On July 24, 2001, His Holiness, Saint John Paul II, called then-Bishop Myers to serve as the fifth Metropolitan Archbishop of Newark, NJ. He was installed as Archbishop of Newark on October 9, 2001. His Holiness conferred the Pallium on Archbishop Myers on June 29, 2002.

In addition to his responsibilities as Metropolitan Archbishop of Newark, Archbishop Myers had also served as the Ecclesial Superior, missio sui iuris, of the Turks & Caicos Islands. 

Upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75, Archbishop Myers submitted his letter of resignation as Archbishop of Newark. His resignation was accepted on November 7, 2016.  Upon the installation of Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., on January 6, 2017, Archbishop Myers was granted the title Archbishop Emeritus of Newark.

Archbishop Myers’ episcopal motto, Mysterium Ecclesiae Luceat (“Let the Mystery of the Church Shine Forth”) is a summary of the central theme of the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium. He often said, “I cannot make someone believe. I can, however, explain what the Church teaches and the reasons for that teaching, and then invite him or her to be open to that teaching and embrace it.”

The wake/visitation for the Archbishop will be open to the public. El Reverendísimo John J. Myers, J.C.D., D.D., Arzobispo Emérito de Newark, entró a la vida eterna el jueves 24 de septiembre de 2020. Tenía 79 años. Al escuchar la noticia del fallecimiento del Arzobispo Myers, el Cardenal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Arzobispo de Newark, dijo: “En nombre de mis hermanos Obispos y de toda la familia de Dios aquí en nuestra Iglesia local de Newark, extiendo mis sinceras oraciones y condolencias a su familia. Demos gracias a Dios por el servicio del Arzobispo Myers y por su amor por nuestra Iglesia. Lo encomiendo a los brazos amorosos de nuestra Santísima Madre María, y ruego que Nuestro Señor le conceda la paz.”

El Arzobispo Myers, nació en Ottawa, Illinois y fue el mayor de siete hermanos, fue ordenado sacerdote en 1966 y consagrado Obispo Coadjutor de Peoria, Illinois, en 1987.

El 24 de julio del 2001, Su Santidad, San Juan Pablo II, llamó al entonces Obispo Myers para servir como el quinto Arzobispo Metropolitano de Newark, NJ. Fue instalado como Arzobispo de Newark el 9 de octubre del 2001. Su Santidad le confirió el Palio al Arzobispo Myers el 29 de junio de 2002.

Además de sus responsabilidades como Arzobispo Metropolitano de Newark, el Arzobispo Myers también sirvió como Superior Eclesial, missio sui iuris, de las Islas Turcos y Caicos.

Al alcanzar la edad de jubilación obligatoria de 75 años, el Arzobispo Myers presentó su carta de renuncia como Arzobispo de Newark. Su renuncia fue aceptada el 7 de noviembre del 2016. Tras la instalación del Cardenal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., el 6 de enero del 2017, el Arzobispo Myers recibió el título de Arzobispo Emérito de Newark.

El lema episcopal del Arzobispo Myers, Mysterium Ecclesiae Luceat (“Que el misterio de la Iglesia brille”) es un resumen del tema central de la Constitución Dogmática del Concilio Vaticano II sobre la Iglesia, Lumen Gentium. El a menudo decía: “No puedo hacer que alguien crea. Sin embargo, puedo explicarle lo que enseña la Iglesia y las razones para esa enseñanza, y luego invitarlo a estar abierto a esa enseñanza y abrazarla”.
